West Quoddy Head Lighthouse
Lubec, ME
In 1806, Thomas Jefferson authorized the raising of a lighthouse on West Quoddy Head. In 1808, the light became operational and added a good measure of safety for ships going through the treacherous Quoddy Narrows.
The present tower was built in 1858 to house the more modern Fresnel lenses that project the light greater distances.
At night, she shows two white flashes every fifteen seconds, visible for eighteen miles; in daylight, she is recognized by her red and white tatoo. The tower is eighty-three feet high.
