Trinidad Head Light
trinidad, ca
Built in 1871, this unusually small light tower (25’) stands one hundred and ninety-six feet above sea level. She is identified by her oscillating white light every four seconds and can be seen for fourteen miles. In fog, her rumbling horn has warned many a sailor of the impending dangerous shore. She was automated in 1974.
I know very little about this light, but one item impressed me about the location. It is often in the path of many storms and raging seas. In 1914, a keeper reported waves that smashed up over the light tower and put the light out of commission. Remember, the light is about two hundred feet high.
Now that’s what I call a wave.
