St. Augustine Lighthouse
St. augustine,fl
Florida's first official lighthouse!
She was built in 1874 and sits on the site of the original wood tower that was there in 1586. This magnificent light is still an active aid to navigation, guiding mariners out of harm's way
She is located on the north side of Anastasia Island on a site once occupied by a watchtower that housed Spanish troops. In 1824, when Spain ceded Florida to the United States, that tower was converted to a lighthouse. But storms and erosion collapsed the building into the sea.
Rebuilding was completed in 1874. This tall beauty measures one hundred and sixty-five feet above sea level. She shows a fixed white light together with a flashing white light that can be seen for twenty-four miles from seaward.
There is a splendid museum in the keeper's home!
