Sankaty Head Lighthouse
Nantucket, ma
Sankaty Head Light was built of brick in 1850 on a ninety-foot bluff, giving it an effective height of one hundred and sixty-six feet above sea level. The Indian word for highland is Sankaty!
She shows a flashing white light every seven and a half seconds and is visible from twenty-four miles away; during the day she is identified by a red stripe around her middle.
Before this light was built, sailors plying their trade considered Nantucket a very dangerous place because of the perilous Davis South shoals just offshore of the island. Many a ship went to the bottom trying to find their way. Even now, with the light, mariners are wary of the dreaded shoals!
Nantucket is a great place to visit with its cobblestone streets, choice of many restaurants, beautiful museums, good shopping and a very interesting marina. The island is steeped in history and you may imagine sea captains walking along the flower-laden picket fenced streets on their way home!
You won’t regret visiting this place.
