Point Reyes Light
Point reyes, ca
Perched high above the ocean at two hundred and sixty-five feet above sea level, this famous light is identified from seaward by flashing a white light every five seconds that can be seen from twenty-four miles away. In fog, her mighty horn, once operated by water pressure, rumbles through the mist to warn mariners of danger.
Point Reyes Light was commissioned in 1870, but the idea of a light on Point Reyes was hatched around 1850. The civil war shelved the project.
Today, everything is automated and the light, horn and radio beacon are housed in a small building further down the cliff.
This is a very popular tourist stop and visitors are allowed right inside the light tower - and the views are spectacular.
