Point Montara Lighthouse
montara, CA
Around 1872, a foghorn was installed at Point Montara, just off Moss Beach, to aid commercial vessels transiting San Francisco Bay. It took another eighteen years to get a light working, and that was a red lantern on a post. It took another twenty-eight years, 1928, to construct the present cast iron light tower and Keeper’s quarters.
She was automated in 1970 and is still an active aid to navigation. Her identifying characteristics are a flashing white light every five seconds that can be seen for fifteen miles. And she stands seventy feet above sea level.
Point Montara Lighthouse is open to the public and there is a Youth Hostel on the grounds.
This is a great place to visit.
