Pemaquid Point Light

Built in 1827, this very popular light is identified from seaward by showing a flashing white light every six seconds that can be seen from fourteen miles away.  The tower is only thirty-eight feet high, but its elevated location puts the light at seventy-nine feet above sea level.

This light is located on one of Maine’s many coastal rock formations that reach out into the sea.  The sheer rock formations drop straight down and there is plenty of deep water right alongside the cliffs.  It is a most beautiful thing to see.

In 1635, the Angel Gabriel was wrecked on Pemaquid Point and five people perished.  It wasn’t until 1826 that Congress appropriated $4000.00 to build a lighthouse.
