North Light

Between 1819 and 1838, fifty-nine ships were wrecked in the surrounding waters of Block Island.  In 1829, the first lighthouse was built on Sandy Point.

In 1832, the schooner Warrior was wrecked off Sandy Point in view of the lighthouse – and twenty-one souls perished.  Several were buried on the island.

The present lighthouse is the fourth attempt and was built in 1867.

Block Island is a special place for my family and sailing friends; for many years we rented houses on the island during Block Island Race Week and raced our boats Hustler and Livewire.  You could always count on a stiff breeze on this end of the island.

At night, North Light flashes a white light every five seconds that is visible for thirteen miles.  Her light is fifty-eight feet above sea level.
